Who can go on wilderness trips?
Anybody! Adirondack Camp has backcountry trips designed for all ages and skill levels. Some excursions go deep in the Adirondack wilderness for multiple nights, and some are just an afternoon!
Do I have to go on off site wilderness trips?
No. The wilderness trips program at Adirondack camp is completely voluntary. Some campers never go off site while some spend half the summer exploring the six million acre Adirondack Park. Campers can choose to sign up on a first come first served basis. Some trips fill the opening day of camp; others go with only three campers. If you chose to go on every trip you were eligible for you would still only average being off –site three days a week. That means four days a week you are in still in camp!
Do I need to bring my own gear/equipment?
All campers will receive a trips packing list for what personal items to bring. Camp will supply all group camping gear; tents, cooking equipment, food and backpacks. We have some sleeping bags to borrow but encourage campers to bring their own. Proper clothing, especially footwear, is essential, especially those choosing to go on the extensive hikes.
What camp counselors go on back country trips?
Every wilderness trip has at least two staff, usually one male and one female, depending on group gender, size and ages. No wilderness overnight will have more than eight campers, maximum of six for ages 12 and under. Trip staff driving any van must be at least 21 years old and have their record cleared by the state of New York. Adirondack Camp has six wilderness trip staff that have extensive backcountry experience, life guarding and wilderness first aid certifications.
