When do I have to arrive at Camp?

Counselors typically arrive around nine days prior to the campers in order to attend our week of Leadership Training. All areas of camp are discussed and this is mandatory for all new and returning staff.

What kind of training will I receive?

Our Leadership Training week is a very comprehensive program covering all pertinent topics and areas of Adirondack Camp including Camp traditions and philosophy, cabin life, and activity lesson plans.

Minimum Requirements:

Lifeguards: American Red Cross Certified & First Aid/CPR for Professional Rescuer with Lakefront.

Wilderness: WFR, WFA, or RTE along with First Aid/CPR for Professional Rescuer.

General Staff: First Aid/CPR for the Professional Rescuer

Do you provide any staff transportation?
Do you provide any staff transportation?

We provide very limited assistance for staff to get to Camp. Counselors are expected to coordinate their own transportation to the nearest bus stop (northern Schroon Lake), train station (Ticonderoga–Empire Line), or airport (Albany International). Staff may bring their own cars to Camp too and park them at the top of the hill.

Is there a uniform requirement?

Similar to campers, Adirondack counselors wear a white staff shirt and navy shorts or pants from Retreat (formal flag-lowering ceremony before dinner) through dinner to the end of the evening. All Staff are expected to wear attire and footwear that is appropriate for activity and occasion at camp.

How much time do I get off?

Counselors get one full day and night off during the week. A staff phone, the Internet, and staff room are also available for the time off.

Where do I sleep?

Most staff will live in the cabins with campers and the age group that best suits every counselor will be determined during the Leadership Training week.

Counselors are responsible for the well-being and safety of all campers twenty-four hours a day even during non-teaching activity times in Camp.

What are some special things that counselors do for campers?
What are some special things that counselors do for campers?

Counselors help create and execute all of the “Special Days” (recent years have included “Super Hero Day," “Pirate Day," and “Gold Rush”) Blue/White activities, and our Native American campfire ceremony of Awiskini. They also help during mealtimes and other evening activities. We have a terrific Carnivale! at the end of the season and the female staff also paint “wish boards” for all second session girls.

We want to hear about it! Over the years, we have had counselors who have brought us favorite games such as Borgball, Crokinole, Frisbee Golf, and modified Rugby. We even had a counselor who created and activity called “Anything-that-Floats” where campers collected and arranged recyclables into floating rafts and raced them around the peninsula. Not only did they have a lot of fun, but they learned about recycling and the environment too!

Paychecks are distributed three times during the season including a final one upon successful completion of contract terms.
