Matt’s father was a staff member at Adirondack from 1951-1954 and instilled Matt with a love of camp life; he practically grew up at kids camp. He was a camper for six years, a counselor for five years, and has been director for the past seventeen years. His experience and love of camp makes him an ideal director.
Matt and his wife, Nina teach at Greenwich Country Day School. Matt’s tremendous energy keeps him connected with children year round; he coaches ice hockey, cross country, and is in the center of many activities in Greenwich during the off season.
Matt and Nina’s son, Jack is currently in the Intermediate Boy’s Line, and their daughter, Anna is anxiously awaiting her birthday so she can officially join the girls’ cabin.
“I believe that Adirondack Camp is a place where a child is able to develop self confidence and take safe risks. It is a place where a child can play, challenge themselves, and where they learn to reach their full potential. It is a place where strong, lasting friendships and memories are forged. Adirondack is a place that remains in the hearts of all the campers, staff and families forever.”
Assistant Director and Camper Advocate
Overnight summer camp at Adirondack has been part of Merritt’s life for over thirty-two years. As Camp’s Assistant Director, her goal is to pass on the same ideals of leadership, growing, and caring to staff and campers she received as a young camper. Merritt is also in the important liaison role of Camper Advocate. She works with parents to get to know every child, and teams up with all departments of Camp to ensure each camper receives the care and attention outlined by parents in the Confidential Questionnaire, emails, and telephone communications.
In the off-season, Merritt is a Certified Insurance Counselor, fourth-generation owner of her family’s insurance agency, and is working on her second Masters degree. However, she loves being at camp and has passed on her passion for summer camp for girls and boys to her husband, Jim, and daughter, Heather.
Merritt says, “Camp has afforded me an amazing opportunity to grow as an individual. I honestly believe that every minute of every Adirondack day is a gift to all of us and that our time together should never be wasted…”
