The Lake George Five: Black Mountain
Part of Adirondack Camp’s “Lake George Five” (LG5), Black Mountain is one of five iconic peaks surrounding Lake George that campers may explore through our wilderness trips program.
The first is Black Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 2,646 feet and is the highest mountain overlooking Lake George. This 5.7-mile hike rewards campers with stunning panoramic views across the northern half of the lake, including Anthony’s Nose, Rogers Rock Slide, and the island-dotted Narrows stretching southward.
Hiking has long been an important part of the Adirondack Camp experience. Through our wilderness trips program, campers build confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection to the outdoors while exploring the Adirondack Mountains surrounding camp.
Although the exact origin of Black Mountain’s name remains uncertain, some believe it comes from a devastating thunderstorm and forest fire in the 1600s that left the entire peak charred black.
