One of the best parts and most unique parts of summer at Adirondack Camp is venturing beyond our peninsula and into the heart of the Adirondack Park and beyond. With countless peaks to climb, lakes to paddle, and trails to discover, our Trips program gives campers the chance to unplug, challenge themselves, and experience the magic of the wilderness firsthand. Trips really has something for everyone, this summer, we didn’t just provide hiking adventures—our campers set out on waterfront adventures, arts-inspired outings, land sports excursions, and even fun trips outside of camp to places like mini golf and laser tag! Each journey was an opportunity to build new friendships, grow confidence, and create memories in the great outdoors.

Wilderness Trips in Review

by Head of Trips Sean Dalton, and Assistant Head of Trips Cleo Bosgra

This year in Wilderness Trips we had such a blast. We had a couple of our favorites make their return to the program after a few years away, like Mt Marcy, the tallest mountain in New York, and a Sailing adventure to the Narrows, islands at the southern end of Lake George. Our windsurfing trip for once didn’t get rained out which was amazing. Our awesome campers covered an incredible amount of miles, 1443 miles in total, 806 for Blue Team and 636 for White Team. That is the distance from Lake George, New York to Orlando, Florida, or 55 marathons!

Island Week (Week 3) was the perfect mid-season change of pace. Campers paddled across to the Hague Islands for the night to get a taste of tent life without straying too far from ADK. Smores, fires, laughs and huge smiles were seen during and when they arrived back at camp the next morning. The biggest highlight came in Week 7, when a few bold campers tackled one of our greatest challenges… THE 5ALIVE! That’s the five tallest mountains surrounding Lake George in a single day. They set off just before sunrise and crushed the previous record by over an hour, completing the circuit (including travel time, and strict timer rules) in 9 hours and 52 minutes. What an achievement!

We have also had new trips brought into our program, we had two senior-only trips bowling and an intermediate-only trip minigolfing. We also had a ranger trip to the wilderness center and a trip to watch a baseball game in Vermont! We loved our time out in the lovely Adirondacks, exploring and sharing our amazing backyard with our campers and can’t wait to do it all again next year! Stay curious and keep exploring.

Highlights of the Summer:

  • 5Alive record, 9hr52min! Smashed previous record by 1hr 3min
  • 1443 miles total, 806 miles Blue, 636 miles White
  • 6 LG5 quest completed
  • Mt Marcy
  • Sailing trip
  • Bag of Peaks- 5 mountains, 3 days!
